Average American Consumes 57 Gallons of Soft Drinks Per Year

Can you believe it,  57 gallons of Soda each per year.  Wow think of the calories! That’s over One gallon per week, per person or 16 eight ounce cans (155 calories per 8 ounce can = 2,480 calories) per week.  Even if you are drinking diet soda the intense sweetness leaves you craving more sweet things and is rumored to have other negative effects.

However, giving up soda is not an easy thing to do … believe me I used to fall off the wagon frequently!

I’m not sure if its the fizz or the sweetness I crave but I’ve found something that helps. I now keep a bottle of Club Soda ( zero calories and 6mg sodium, Cola has average of 9mg of sodium)  or Seltzer (zero calories and O sodium) around and use that instead. You can even get flavored versions – I’ve lost 10 pounds, which is a bottom line I can live with!

Hi Laine: I have backed way off of most sodas, regular and diet, and stick to water (or anything decaff) when we dine out most of the time. Especially if it is getting late…won’t even drink iced tea because it keeps me awake. You will remember how much of a night owl I have always been. I’ve found that being off the sodas, even diet, is also better for controlling my diabetes. Sure wish I was in the same shape as when we sat on top the hill at the Alaska State Fair those many moons ago.

    Hi Doreen,

Oh yes wouldn’t we both like to be like that again .

I’ve also realized that before coming to the US I basically drank 1 soda a week and even with diet soda that added inches to my waist with the craving for sugar and the effect on my bones. I gave up completely losing 10lb and then slipped, but have finally got myself to a place were I only drink ‘soft’ drinks or pop as mixers.

As for tea, I can’t see anytime I’ll give that up but I opt for tissanes (herbal brews: peppermint, chamomile, or licorice) after 8pm so they don’t bother my sleep pattern.

Terrifying to realize that our time at the Alaska State Fair was 20 years ago ~ maybe its time for a revisit.

    Thanks for popping in.

The calculations are wrong. There are only 100 calories in 8 ounce can of coke. So the whole math doesn’t make sense.

  5. Laine D. says:

    try it again, 2 x 8oz = 1 pint, 8 pints = 1 gallon, – 1900 +calories per week per person!
